Standard NDT Ultrasonic Testing
Pipeline integrity cannot be accurately determined by sight. Defects, corrosion, or damage can exist deep within the pipeline’s material, underneath protective coatings, within welded joints, or at recently repaired sites. Ultrasonic Testing utilizes sound wave technology to determine pipeline integrity. This non-destructive form of testing sends various forms of sound waves into pipelines and analyzes the reflections to detect anomalies, defects, and other imperfections.
Identifying weaknesses, damage, or potential hazards in pipeline infrastructure allows specialists to handle these issues more efficiently and with fewer impacts on productivity. Catching problems before they become full-blown problems is safer and more cost-effective. Even when no compromising issues are found, the resulting test data helps operators evaluate their systems and better allocate resources for maintenance and upkeep.
Circle B Non-Destructive Examination specializes in ultrasonic testing and other forms of pipeline integrity management to ensure various pipeline systems’ safe and reliable operation. Contact us today to learn more.
Traditional Shear Wave and Straight Beam Ultrasonic Testing
Ultrasonic testing using traditional shear wave and straight beam methods are somewhat similar. Both send high-frequency sound waves into a pipeline and analyze the reflections to detect defects and anomalies.
- Shear Wave – This method uses shear, or angled, sound waves aimed from off-center toward the pipeline’s surface.
- Straight Beam – This method sends sound waves directly, or straight, into the pipeline material at right angles to the surface.
These ultrasonic testing forms are valuable for detecting internal defects and assessing the overall condition of pipelines and repaired sections.
FAST UT (Flaw Analysis & Sizing Technique) Ultrasonic Testing
Ultrasonic testing with FAST UT, or Full Matrix Capture and Total Focusing Method Ultrasonic Testing utilizes a comprehensive matrix of ultrasonic data to create high-resolution images of the pipeline’s internal structure, allowing for precise defect detection and characterization. FAST UT offers improved accuracy and sensitivity, making it a valuable tool for ensuring the integrity and safety of pipelines in industries like oil and gas.
Sound energy is a safe and proven means of non-destructive testing (NDT) that can be carried out on various pipeline materials in numerous locations and settings. Circle B NDE specialists use ultrasonic testing methods in their arsenal of tools to detect problems and help your company keep operations flowing.
